Chapter Six

Arturo not only owed Cyril for the unpaid checks from the morning when everyone fled the diner but now he also owed the guy a new car. The walk to town had taken longer than he’d expected, and that was because he’d kept an even pace so Braydon could keep up with him.

“You’re mad,” Braydon said. “I can tell.”

“Not at you.” And that was the truth. “I’m angry at myself for not making sure you had the thumb drive on you before we fled the house.”

It would’ve saved them time and trouble, as if they weren’t already in enough trouble.

“You never told me where you hid it.” He also noticed how Braydon wouldn’t look at him. Was his mate embarrassed by what they’d done back in the woods? Arturo had no regrets about their intimacy and would do it again in a heartbeat.

His mate even kept a healthy distance between them as they used backyards to make their way to his house. Arturo didn’t want anyone spotting him strolling down the street naked and call the cops on him.

“In a really good spot,” Braydon said. “I heard Scarface mention a name. He said someone called Vela Davila hired them to wipe some records out. They made a copy of those records as an insurance policy, and one of the guy’s with him said they were going to sell that information back to Mr. Davila at a staggering price.”

Arturo stopped walking. They were currently in a yard with a swing set, a sandbox, and enclosed with a chain-link fence. There was a huge silver grill under a large canopy attached to the house. Potted plants decorated the patio, along with furniture.

A typical house filled with people who led ordinary lives. They probably invited friends over for barbecues while their kids played together, although Arturo had never been a fan of sandboxes. The sand got into all the cracks on the body, and all kinds of germs were in the box.

But none of that was what made him stop. The American Dream he stood in had ceased to capture his attention. It was the name that froze Arturo’s heart.

“What?” Braydon squinted at him. “What’s wrong?” His mate looked around as Arturo made his racing heart calm.

“We need to get that device and get the hell out of town.” He jumped the fence and waited for Braydon to join him. Arturo would give anything to have some clothes on and something on his feet.

“You know that name, don’t you?” Braydon asked. “It sounded familiar to me when Scarface said it, but for the life of me, I don’t remember where I heard it before.”

Arturo pressed a finger to his lips when they were two backyards away from his house. He crouched down and made Braydon do the same as he scanned the area.

“I’m gonna have to shift. I can scent better in my lion form. It will take only a second for me to do what I have to do.”

Braydon looked wide-eyed at him but nodded.
